This 500-year-old, timbered inn is the very personification of classy Cotswold charm. Low-beamed ceilings, walk-in fireplaces and cosy nooks and crannies are all present and correct, and candlelit tables add to the cossetting mood. On the food side, the kitchen takes local sourcing seriously and shows real flair in carefully wrought dishes. A smoked scallop and black pudding ravioli with smoked fish bisque gets things off to a flying start, then baked pork tenderloin is stuffed with spinach and apricot and arrives with olive oil potato, carrots and a punchy smoked garlic sauce. An airy lemon sponge with lemon curd, raspberries and Earl Grey custard makes a storming conclusion.
