Built in 1878 in the Venetian style, Beechfield House has been gently updated for 21st-century requirements. Soft classical music is just right for the handsome restaurant, with its chandelier, rug on the wooden floor, large gilded mirror above the mantelpiece and Roman blinds at the windows. The cooking follows a contemporary theme and keeps things fairly simple, including the brief descriptions of dishes on the menus. Start with cauliflower velouté hazelnut, hazelnut cream and follow with salt cod Beluga lentils, squid and sea vegetables. There's a dab hand at desserts too, sending out dishes such as milk chocolate pannacotta, honeycomb caramelised white chocolate, and milk sorbet.
