This Georgian hotel stands on an island in a 26-acre lake, with a modern extension on the shore accessed via a bridge, which explains how the attractive Bridgewalk restaurant was named. Dishes are admirably understated and flavours are to the fore, with starters taking in ham hock terrine with rhubarb relish, piccalilli purée and soused vegetables. Main course could bring on peppered venison steak with Jerusalem artichoke Lyonnaise and dark chocolate sauce, or monkfish wrapped in Parma ham served with samphire and white wine beurre blanc. Bow out on a high note with puddings such as Yorkshire rhubarb crème brûlée with vanilla ice cream.
