A corn and spinning mill in the 17th century, this inn is the sort of place we’d all like as our local: a warren of rooms with a rustic look of beams, exposed stone, and mismatched tables and chairs. Service is friendly but polished and the ambience warm and convivial. The kitchen turns out an inviting menu that ranges wildly from starters such as poached and roasted partridge with chestnut purée and burnt orange sauce, to mains like Calderdale rabbit with smoked air-dried ham, pearl barley risotto, prunes and a mini shepherd’s pie of leg meat. To finish, perhaps lemon tart with blackberry sorbet and macaroons.
