This 17th-century inn, once a mill, is an atmospheric old place with open fires, low beams and friendly but professional staff. The kitchen turns out some inspired and complex dishes. Crab with beetroot, pickled carrots and courgettes, burned lime and crackers is impressive, as is a main course of rolled and poached saddle of wild rabbit (cooked to perfection) served with langoustines, five spice, roast carrots, aged ham and light Jersey Royal soufflé. Seasonal game is a strength - partridge and chestnut pie, roast pheasant - and vegetarians are well looked after too. To finish, lemon tart with orange meringue, blood orange, pistachio and sorrel delivers great flavours.
