Originally three 17th-century, brick-and-flint workmen's cottages, this charming hideaway comes into its own on a balmy evening, when the lawned gardens with ducks quacking along the millstream make an idyllic spot for drinks. The kitchen stays abreast of modern trends while keeping traditionalists happy with starters like duck rillettes with pear and ginger chutney and walnut toast. Combinations are intelligently considered, so roasted turbot comes with parsley purée, salsify, curried cauliflower and crispy mussels, and South Downs lamb rump with lamb faggots, honey-roasted parsnips and lamb jus. Don’t skip pudding when there’s pineapple upside-down cake with rum caramel and raisin ice cream up for grabs.
