Built of red brick and flint, this charming hotel was originally three 17th-century workmen's cottages. On a balmy evening, the lawned gardens with ducks quacking along the millstream make an idyllic spot for drinks. The kitchen stays abreast of modern trends while keeping traditionalists happy. Starters can be as classic as home-smoked salmon with celeriac remoulade, or twice-baked cheese soufflé with cheddar and spring onion sauce. Combinations are intelligently considered, so pork fillet and belly are served with pickled apple and potato croquettes, and hake fillet with mussel and smoked bacon chowder. Puddings are worth exploring: try pistachio cake with cashew ice cream and almond cream.
