The whitewashed Richmond is one of the glories of West Ashling, a peaceful village at the foot of the South Downs, only five minutes from Chichester. Daily specials are written up on the blackboard, and there's a wood-fired oven for traditional pizzas. Indeed, the extensive menus look far and wide for inspiration, from wood-roast aubergine with goats' curd, poppadoms and 'tandoori honey', to mains such as braised fallow venison shank in sweet Persian spices with nutty couscous, and grilled sea bass with a sweetcorn fritter and gingered squash in coconut and macadamia sambal. A dessert featuring Kahlúa brûlée, Baileys ice cream and Grand Marnier froth, certainly packs a punch.
