Halliday's occupies three flint-fronted thatched cottages dating from the 13th century, where chef Andy Stephenson sources first-rate produce from the local area. His seasonal summer menu begins with sautéed squid with chorizo, red wine, rocket and griddled ciabatta, or a croustade of roasted tomato, red onion and mozzarella with wild marjoram. Among meaty main courses, local rump of lamb teamed with baked aubergine, tomato, and basil oil is a bit of a treat, while fish might include wild black bream with shaved fennel, pink peppercorns and blood oranges. To finish, try an exemplary vanilla crème brûlée, whose richness is matched with a vibrant passionfruit sorbet and buttery shortbread.
