Buzzy brasserie cooking stately house style

Wines by the glass

In a stately Victorian mansion overlooking the canal, the dining room wears a more understated modern look. Expect brasserie buzz rather than a country-house whispering gallery, and food that satisfies most modern tastes. Spiced crab and saffron tortellini with brown crab aïoli in shellfish bisque has an array of appetising flavours in it, while pickled quince and raisin purée sharpen up a slice of chicken liver pâté. Lamb two ways presents braised shoulder and fried rump on quinoa with a thoroughgoing Moroccan-spiced jus, though grilled steaks are the principal main-course draw. Chocolate and raspberry delice sprinkled with amaretti crumbs is a classy finisher.
