Originating as a peripatetic pop-up, Adam and Natasha Stokes' restaurant moved into its permanent residence in early 2016 and set about making itself at home. The principal dining room on the ground floor is a distinctly elegant space with large annular light fittings, unclothed tables and comfortable seating. Service moves with discreet efficiency over the thick-pile carpet, delivering thrillingly presented dishes of confident and refined modern British food. An opening course of accurately timed monkfish comes with thinly tempura-battered eel, Roscoff onion petals and slivered grapes, as well as a foam-light onion purée with capers and dill, as a possible prelude to breast and smoked heart of duck with hispi cabbage, shiitakes and parsley root, or rare-breed Hampshire pork with black pudding, quince and crisp-topped potato terrine. A reimagined tarte Tatin has expert caramelisation with a hit of Calvados, along with a tart granita of Pink Lady apple, or go for the CasaLuker 70% chocolate fix, served with salted pecans and 'Horlicks'. The tasting menu aims to win you over with eight ingeniously constructed dishes, and there are some imaginative wine pairings to accompany.
