History seeps from every stone of the Howard, a 400-year-old inn on a Warwickshire village green to the south of Stratford. A big old stone fireplace, weathered armchairs and unclothed tables make for a relaxing ambience, and the cooking is in the modern country-pub mould. A backbone of ploughman's platters and beer-battered haddock and chips throws into relief the more new-fangled offerings. These might comprise seared scallops with black pudding crumble, carrot purée and cauliflower fritters, lamb rump with toasted almonds, sweet potato purée and roast shallots, and puddings such as toffee and banana in butterscotch, or cherry baked Alaska.
