Part of the Alscot Estate, The Bell is a free house with classy bedrooms and a bar stocked with the estate's own ales, and a restaurant, now extended to cover two floors, that successfully brings contemporary elements into the traditional space. Service is upbeat and effective. The menu deals in simple ideas with a modern touch. Warm ham hock salad is properly dressed, while baby squid, flavoured with lime and coriander and served with sweet pickled vegetables and egg noodles, brings an Asian flavour to proceedings. Main-course grilled mackerel comes with a saffron-infused risotto, or go for tender slow-cooked pork belly. Finish with a pretty dark chocolate and hazelnut torte.
