The formal garden outside this splendid Victorian house brings a stately presence to the Jacobean-style property. The restaurant matches the setting with its grandeur, with period features such as oak panels and huge windows. Start with a pre-dinner drink, maybe a Posh Pimm’s, in the lounge and eat alfresco if the weather is up to snuff. The concise menu offers a contemporary take on classic country-house cuisine, so duck liver pate comes with ginger brioche and strawberry textures, and goats’ cheese is served with beetroot and black olive tuille. Follow with sea bass, Parmentier potatoes, fine beans, saffron sauce and lemon foam, or 8oz fillet steak, triple cooked chips, baby carrots, beetroot and port reduction.
