Part of the allure of Jesmond Dene House is that it has the feel of a grand country house, sitting in a tranquil wooded valley, yet is actually within the city limits of Newcastle. Its original Georgian architect, John Dobson, designed much of the old city centre, but a makeover in the 1870s turned it into an Arts and Crafts gem. Restyled for the 21st century as a boutique bolthole, it’s a welcoming place with two dining rooms and a lovely fair-weather terrace. Head chef Michael Penaluna stocks his larder with the pick of local, seasonal materials and has the confidence to let the flavours speak for themselves. There is refinement, creativity and skill in the execution of dishes: a starter of rabbit terrine comes with rhubarb, carrot gel and morcilla, or there may wood pigeon breast in the forthright company of beetroot and quince. At main-course stage, monkfish is handled with aplomb and matched with asparagus, peas and subtly flavoured smoked potato mash. Those in search of more assertive flavours might take loin of Northumberland venison with smoked bacon, parsnips, figs and crispy kale. It all ends with a tricksy dessert of warm apple espuma with vanilla custard, dried apple and apple sorbet
