Originally built for a Victorian industrialist, today's hotel retains bags of period features, allied with contemporary verve and character. Dining goes on mainly in a conservatory extension with tiled floor and commanding views over the lawns, as well as in the interior room behind it. Start with an imaginative composition of blue cheese pannacotta with beetroot purée, apple and toasted peanuts, then move on to a well-executed main course pairing of pork fillet and shoulder with black pudding and potato bake and red cabbage. At the end, a purée of roast apple works well as a counterpoint to baked cheesecake with cinnamon ice cream and mini doughnuts.
