Occupying a period building in the town centre, this is the sort of friendly restaurant we would all like on our manor. First-class ingredients are the name of the game in a repertoire of uncomplicated modern European-style dishes, all realised with technical verve. Mussels with chorizo and saffron and coriander cream is one starter, or more complex confit pig's cheek with truffled parsnip purée, pistachio powder, Parma ham and thyme jus. Main courses take in monkfish fillet with a grilled langoustine, shrimp bisque and courgettes, or beef fillet with marrowbone, bavarois sauce and asparagus. For dessert, try banana brûlée, glace and cromesquis with caramel popcorn.
