A Tudor manor house in the Surrey countryside may not quite be what you are expecting to come across within striking distance of Gatwick, but Langshott is not a mirage. Indeed, it could barely be better placed to uncrumple you after an arduous air journey, and spa treatments, pretty gardens and suave contemporary design are among its assets. Executive chef Philip Dixon supervises proceedings in the Mulberry dining room, a relaxing modern space with flashes of vibrant colour against a neutral backdrop. Much of the kitchen's produce is grown on site, and so a keen sense of the passing seasons is evident on contemporary classic menus that take in wild duck haggis with foie gras, apple and rhubarb, or spiced crispy squid with red cabbage and pancetta, ahead of seared turbot with mussels, dressed in mustard, orange and dill, or loin of fallow deer with smoked beetroot and horseradish. Fashionable veggie desserts might offer textures of parsnip to go with caramelised banana, or add sweet-sour sherry vinaigrette ice cream to sticky toffee and pear soufflé. Artisan cheeses come with pear and tomato chutney and pickled walnut bread. A generous selection of wines by the glass allows for productive mixing and matching.
