Well-crafted, unfussy cooking in country gastro-pub

AA Inspector

At a glance

Private dining
Wines by the glass
Wheelchair access

This stylishly made over, mustard-yellow village inn sits comfortably at the gastro pub end of the spectrum, but without losing any of the features one hopes for – smart and cosy rooms with a copper-sheathed bar serving Suffolk ales, plus exposed beams, a huge inglenook and country-style tables. The kitchen here appreciates the value of top-class local ingredients, follows the seasons keenly. Kick off with beetroot gravad lax with caper and lemon dressing, or seared king scallops with Dingley Dell black pudding, chorizo and garlic butter, then follow on with slow-cooked pork belly with sage, Madeira and apple sauce, braised red cabbage and crushed new potato bubble-and-squeak.
