This hotel, restaurant and pub, between Aldeburgh and Southwold, has its roots in the 12th century. 'Hearty yet sophisticated' cooking is the kitchen's aim, with the former apparent in chicken, leek and black pudding terrine with mustard dressing, then sirloin steak with all the trimmings. Asparagus with crispy bacon shavings, a herb-crumbed duck egg and aïoli is a starter with distinct, deep flavours, and might be followed by a nicely balanced main course of crisp-skinned fried sea trout fillet with asparagus, crushed potato and hollandaise. Ambition doesn't falter among puddings: expect chocolate and pistachio cake with chocolate sorbet and cherries.
