The Grange did its bit in the last war, acting as a makeshift army hospital. It retains its period appeal, with an oak-panelled dining room setting the stage for informal modern British food. That latter-day classic, ham hock terrine with piccalilli shows up well, with delicately judged sea bass to follow, accompanied by Lyonnaise potatoes and braised fennel in caper butter. Seared cod is tenderly swaddled in Parma ham and served with chorizo and wilted greens in tomato velouté, before the voice of sweet temptation calls out in the tones of dark chocolate tart with white chocolate crème brûlée and pistachio ice cream.
