Perfectly placed for exploring Constable country, the 16th-century Crown has morphed into a classy boutique inn with 11 swish bedrooms. The rambling beamed bar and dining areas sport a smart contemporary look with cockle-warming log fires. Monthly-changing modern British menus, supplemented by daily fish dishes on the chalkboard, reflect the seasons and show flair and imagination. Dinner might start with warm beetroot salad with chargrilled spring onions, Roquefort and focaccia croûtons, then continue with braised goat shoulder with roast garlic mash and purple sprouting broccoli. For pudding, lemon tart comes with lemon curd ice cream and raspberry beignets.
