There has been a hostelry on this site for 800 years, and today's incarnation, co-owned by Ruth Watson (she's also executive chef), one-time TV's Hotel Inspector, has an appealing combination of stylish bedrooms and an easy-going, rustic-chic restaurant. There's genuine character to the spaces within, where pastel colours blended in a modern palette, unclothed wooden tables and comfortable cushioned chairs and benches help create a relaxed vibe. The daily-changing menu has an Italian accent these days, featuring the fashionable Venetian small plates, cicchetti, alongside flavour-driven dishes that showcase the region's excellent ingredients. Kick off with beef carpaccio with Harry's Bar dressing, then move on to chargrilled veal chop with sage butter, or pancetta-wrapped monkfish.
