An expensive facelift relaunched The Crown as a stylish 21st-century inn back in 2009. The look is decidedly boutique, combining 16th-century features with a fresh, contemporary design ethos. The kitchen raids the Suffolk larder for its unfussy, big-hearted modern cooking. Local fish and seafood make a good showing on a wide-ranging menu, firstly in a duo of seared scallops with crispy pig's cheek jazzed up with jalapeño pepper-spiked gribiche and sauced with cider and caramel, followed by grilled skate wing with sautéed new potatoes, purple sprouting broccoli, and cockle and caper butter. Desserts get creative with rhubarb and blood orange jelly with ginger pannacotta, rhubarb and ginger sorbet and gingerbread.
