Ancient beams, panelling and exposed brickwork dating back to medieval times are clear evidence that this was an inn for many centuries, but the name describes today's modern restaurant with rooms. The room is darkly intimate; tables are crisply laid with linen and lit by candles, and as the name would suggest, French influences underpin modern, skilfully rendered food that makes a virtue of simplicity. Start perhaps with Binham Blue cheese beignets with onion salad, before moving to braised ox cheek and seared beef fillet with marrowbone. Desserts go unashamedly for the populist vote, via plum pudding served with mulled wine sabayon.
