Former coaching inn with carefully presented classic cooking

Wines by the glass

It's easy to imagine horse-drawn carriages sweeping into the central courtyard of this 16th-century former coaching inn, with plenty of period details remaining inside and out. The Courtyard Restaurant, however, is a light and contemporary affair with vivid colours and well-spaced dark wood tables. The service team are a cheerful bunch. The menu takes a broadly classical approach with some sound thinking going on and an eye for presentation. Start with game terrine with pickled walnuts and Bramley apple jelly, and move on to an old favourite such as scampi and hand-cut chips, or the more modern pan-fried pheasant breast with Guinness and cumin jus.
