The Wortley Arms is an appealing spot for a pint of local ale and some modern gastro-pub cooking. Timeless staples (beer-battered fish and chips with home-made tartare sauce, or gammon steak with griddled pineapple) rub shoulders with up-to-date ideas, starting with pan-fried belly pork with pig's cheek and butternut squash purée or goats' cheese pannacotta with pickled beetroot and beetroot crisp. Mains focus on prime local materials, such as roast rack of lamb served with a hot pot of shoulder meat, parsnips and roast shallots, or venison haunch with Puy lentils, creamed cabbage and a shepherd's pie croquette. A comforting conclusion might be sticky toffee pudding with pistachio ice cream.
