This mellow, stone 18th-century inn is set amid buxom hills on the Somerset-Dorset border where a glance at the menu shows a clear love for local produce and a creative mind. A typical starter might be pan-roasted scallops with tempura soft-shelled crab, salsa rossa and Serrano ham. Main course loin and braised haunch of locally shot venison goes down a treat with shallot and garlic purée, salsify, pommes Anna, chargrilled broccoli and a rich, sweet date jus. Or there could be pan-fried John Dory with chicken and smoked bacon mousse, oyster and Pernod velouté, brown shrimps and spinach gnocchi. For dessert, lemon meringue tart is allied with cherry sorbet.
