An ancient stone-built inn with hanging baskets is many people's idea of old England, and The Oakhill looks the part. The food itself edges more firmly into modern British territory than hitherto, although devotees of pub classics such as bubble-and-squeak topped with a poached egg, or fish and chips with mushy peas, have not been abandoned. Otherwise, look to ox cheek terrine with red onion compôte in balsamic, and then roast cod with leeks, mussels and new potatoes in fish soup. Sides include the nowadays indispensable dauphinoise, and a satisfying conclusion is reached with desserts that major on chocolate and toffee, but also find room for tarte Tatin.
