The timber-framed property, converted to an inn in around 1670, has been sensitively decorated to retain its history, as witness the dining room, where dark brown upholstery and crisp white linen blend in with stone walls, beams and an inglenook. The kitchen goes for a gentle take on the modern British idiom, partnering ham hock terrine with piccalilli and a crispy quail's egg, ahead of roast rack of lamb with smoked bacon, dauphinoise, peas, broad beans and braised baby gem, or herb-crusted roast hake fillet with mussels, tartare sauce and mini chips. Close with the likes of vanilla pannacotta with rhubarb and ginger ice cream.
