Gentle modern British cooking in a venerable timbered inn

Wines by the glass

In a town not short of timber-framed properties, this 17th-century inn stands out as a landmark. Ornate panelling, plasterwork and venerable timbers attest eloquently enough to its history, as typified in the dining room, where dark brown seats and crisp white linen blend with exposed stone walls, low beams and an inglenook. The kitchen deals in uncontroversial modern British ideas, partnering goats’ cheese pannacotta with pickled wild mushrooms and rocket, ahead of pork tenderloin and slow-braised belly with mustard mash, carrot purée, caramelized apple and Madeira jus. Finish with the comforts of dark chocolate brownie with warm chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream.
