Stone walls, beams and flagstones are reminders that this village inn dates from the 17th century. Real ales are dispensed in the bar, and there's an informal dining room. Everything is sourced from within 30 miles, and the place's own smokery contributes to a satisfying starter of smoked pigeon breast and black pudding with game chips, and quince and morello cherry chutney. Main courses are equally forthright, perhaps loin of hare with beetroot and chocolate purée, rissolé potatoes, root veg and kale. Afters such as sticky toffee and Rutland ale pudding with butterscotch sauce and Grainstore Ale ice cream are not to be missed.
