Creative modern food in elegant village inn

AA Inspector

Overlooking the green in the pretty Rutland village of Exton, this former coaching inn has been feeding people since the 17th century. Refurbished, and now a smart pub with rooms, it retains plenty of original character although the food is thoroughly contemporary. Pan-seared scallops, roasted butternut, spinach, scallop salt, lotus root crisps, cauliflower velouté and truffle oil is one faultlessly-executed starter, followed by rump of lamb, white onion purée, fondant potato, olive tapenade, wild garlic, basil and sherry jus. Puddings are worth exploring: perhaps bourbon cappuccino, vanilla ice cream, espresso-soaked sponge, bourbon cream, almonds and orange truffle.
