The 18th-century stone building on the main street of this riverside village is now a plush small-scale luxury hotel, with a restaurant split into two areas linked by double doors. The seasonally-changing menu might open with fettuccine, cooked al dente, with a sauce of butternut squash, mushrooms and chestnuts, served with sage butter and parmesan shavings, or reassuringly familiar potted shrimps. Trustworthy sourcing is clear in pink slices of venison, of excellent quality, with black pudding clapshot, buttery spring greens and a port and redcurrant sauce, and in sea bass fillet with tomato tagliatelle. Standards are well maintained in puddings of vanilla pannacotta with chopped pineapple, and Eton Mess.
