At this whitewashed Georgian inn at the heart of a peaceful Cotswold village the cooking is presented with much flair and thought, homemade breads arriving swaddled in a little cloth bag. Hot-smoked salmon cut chunkily and served warm with beetroot cubes and apple purée might almost be an old-fashioned pub dish, but then main course brings loin and faggot of venison with braised red cabbage and parsnip-vanilla purée in a sweetly viscous chocolate gravy, or perhaps lemon sole roasted on the bone with brown shrimps, sprouting broccoli and cep sauce. Dessert comes in a Mason jar containing blood orange posset, citrus meringue and orange sorbet in tart blood orange soup.
