As you’d hope from the monicker, the River Thames pursues its unhurried course past the decked terrace and glass frontage of this stylishly converted boathouse. Having honed his skills in some top kitchens, including Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and Per Se in New York, Shaun Dickens has his name above the door and his creative, contemporary food on the menu in a smartly neutral modern space, watched over by an engaging service team. Shaun is passionate about the ingredients he uses, building strong links with farmers and producers, which bears fruit in what arrives on the plate. Confit Loch Duart salmon arrives with compressed cucumber, lemon peel purée, pickled shallots and confit potato, while main-course Merrifield Farm duck comes perfectly pink and crisp-skinned alongside a crisp caraway and onion pastilla, mustard leaf, charred onion and rich duck jus. The invention and impressive presentation continues into a finale of dark chocolate parfait, chocolate streusel and blood orange.
