Witty creativity in a timbered Georgian

Tasting menu

Not far from Sherwood Forest and Byron's Newstead Abbey is this classic Georgian timbered inn. Sand-blasted beams, a brick fireplace and checkered carpeting make for a modernised but still homely atmosphere for showcasing some creatively witty cooking. First may be an updated lunchbox containing a Scotch egg, a truffled cream cheese triangle, a 'Wagon Wheel' made with artichoke marshmallow and gingery pear jam, and more besides. That might lead intrepidly to monkfish vindaloo served with diced potato, puffed rice and mango purée, as well as a fish bhaji and raita. The inventive pace is sustained to the end, when rhubarb and lime trifle comes with cardamom ice cream.
