A small traditional hotel overlooking Sandgate in the old part of Berwick, the Queens Head is a place with ambition. The principal dining room has a stripped wood floor, old beams and well-spaced tables, a relaxing place for upscale pub cooking founded on sound culinary logic. Start with a classic modern salad of goats' cheese, beetroot, walnuts and pomegranate in orange and coriander dressing, as a preamble to a sweetly fruity pheasant curry served with rice and naan, or roasted cod with minted pea mousse. A chocolatey version of bread-and-butter pudding, choc chips standing in for the traditional sultanas, in vanilla-laced custard is a winning finish.
