Compounded of two original townhouses in photogenic Richmond, The Frenchgate is a modern boutique hotel with bags of character. Concentrated technical artistry is on show in a starter of quail's ballotine filled with wild mushroom mousse, alongside a pile of Puy lentils and a morel jelly with a quail egg set in it. Mains cover a spectrum from stone bass with razor clams in an emulsion sauce of brown crab, to mustard-crusted fillet and belly of local pork, appetisingly set off with crisp-fried kale and creamed Savoy, as well as mustard mash. Peach mousse with caramelised peach in its own coulis is a late-summer treat, served with thyme ice cream.

From A1 (Scotch Corner) to Richmond on A6108. After lights, 1st left into Lile Close (leading to Flints Terrace) for hotel car park. Or for front entrance continue to 1st rdbt, left into Dundas St. At T-junct left into Frenchgate
