Wines by the glass

It would take a hard heart not to be seduced by this creeper-clad Georgian coaching inn with its display of local artwork, real fires and a light relaxing colour scheme. Just a short hop from the beach, Kevin and Jacki Mangeolles’ small restaurant with rooms has been gently ‘boutiqued’ into the 21st century, with Kevin’s cooking playing a starring role in securing The Neptune’s place as a top Norfolk dining destination. Dishes balance taste, texture and eye-appeal with easy confidence, and it’s all built on solid foundations of locally-landed fish and seafood, and regional meat and game that’s among the best in England, the latter featuring in main courses such as venison loin teamed with salsify, Jerusalem artichoke purée and wild mushrooms. For the riches of the sea, look to accurately timed brill fillet with baked leek, Brancaster mussels, wild garlic purée, broad beans and pink fir apple potato. Bookending these thoughtfully composed ideas, starters might see sake poached salmon plated with oyster mayonnaise, apple and rocket, and to finish, Columbian white chocolate mousse could be the centrepiece of a delectable dessert that also builds in blueberries and chocolate ice cream, as well as an astringent hit from lime curd.
