Just a short hop from the coast, The Neptune still has the look of an old inn, with its creeper-covered Georgian façade, but it’s a top-notch restaurant with rooms these days. Much of the glorious regional bounty around these parts finds its way into Kevin Mangeolles’ kitchen and onto a fixed-price carte and full-works tasting menu. The dining room is a smart, intimate space, with a neutral colour scheme and tables dressed in white linen. The cooking has classical roots, loads of good ideas and those local ingredients to the fore; Brancaster mussels, for example, with Serrano ham and apple, or Norfolk quail and truffle terrine. Main course suckling pig is accompanied by cabbage, butternut squash and dauphine potato, while British and French cheeses come with biscuits and grape chutney, or there might be almond iced nougat with strawberry, coconut and lime. The smart wine list has good options by the glass and half bottle.
