Confident cooking in charming dining pub

AA Inspector

Private dining
Wines by the glass

The pub itself - with six charming bedrooms - may well date from the early 17th century, but the king in question is Edward VII (born 1841), chosen for his reputation as a bon viveur. There are real ales and the likes of fish and chips up for grabs, plus low oak beams, real fires and plenty of character. Its reputation as a dining pub is confirmed by its well-judged output such as the nicely caramelised scallops that arrive with cauliflower purée and black pudding, a subtle flavour of cumin running through the dish, and the precision and thrilling simplicity of roasted rump of lamb with celeriac purée, charred leeks and Chantenay carrots.
