Comfortably in step with its Kensington postcode, this high-end Indian in a grand former bank has the feel of a Raj-era gentlemen's club, with its high ceilings, oak panels and colonial pictures. Taking classic, Moghul-inspired North Indian dishes as its starting point, the kitchen throws creative touches into the mix to conjure scintillating, palate-tingling flavours. Ajwaini macchi – monkfish marinated with ginger, yogurt, carom seeds and turmeric – gets the tastebuds primed for superb gosht dum biryani, the lamb and rice sealed in a pastry-topped pot and cooked over charcoal, or a suitably luxurious grilled lobster with garlic, mango and spicy tomato sauce.
