Modern dining in wood-panelled Mayfair room

Launched just over a decade ago, Anthony Demetre's Wild Honey feels as though it has been here for much longer, in part because its decor feels so appealingly venerable. A long wood-panelled room with bar seating and small bistro tables evokes something of the feel of the Mayfair dining of old, the sort of place Anthony Powell's characters might repair to, although the menu is anything but stuck in a time-warp. A resourceful, creative approach sees a first-course serving of quail lacquered in sweet spice and grilled, then served with kumquat purée and roast carrots. Fashionable fragrances of the sea turn up in a main dish of cod with sea purslane and sprouting broccoli in seaweed vinaigrette, while the impeccably tender venison is sourced on Dartmoor, and earthily supported by sweet potato and puréed beetroot. The artisanal British and French cheeses are worth a gander as a transition to one of the sharply flavoured desserts, perhaps rosewater cheesecake with caramelised apple. Warm chocolate soup with roast banana ice cream is the sweet star of a winter carte.
