It's all happening on the Greenwich Peninsula, which has gradually been transformed into a smart London quarter with its own cultural milieu, and a swish InterContinental Hotel to boot. The Peninsula Restaurant on the second floor has views of the whole district, with Canary Wharf hovering behind it, and amid the sleek contemporary design, a menu of cutting-edge cooking completes the picture. A suitably luxurious lobster ravioli partnered with crosnes and Noilly Prat sauce, or seared foie gras with pickled dates, shiso and salted pancake might open proceedings. This is creative, confident cooking with a strong sense of freshness, flavour and balance. Next up, there may be beef in a sweet and sour composition involving fermented celeriac and calçot onions, or perhaps halibut with turnips and satay sauce. If you’re keeping step with the vogue for meat-free ideas, leek quiche with smoked cheddar and lovage adds up to more than the spartan menu description. Desserts such as rhubarb with cream tea and vanilla, or sticky toffee pudding with caramel and popcorn maintain the creative momentum.
