The Mayfair mews location promises discreet, high-end pleasures, approached along a decked pathway lined with bamboo plants, box hedges, bay trees, sculptures and little fountains – a delightful, tranquil garden setting that makes you wish alfresco dining was on the cards. Inside, the soothing decor establishes a connection with nature via views of the garden from the serenely stylish dining room; restful shades of beige and ivory are offset by dark wood floors, avocado-coloured leather banquettes and chairs, tables dressed in their finest white linen, and a feature wall with a filigree display of tree branches to hammer home the garden theme. Extremely professional yet very friendly service plays its part in creating an oasis of calm and refinement. Arnaud Bignon cooks from the heart, starting with the best ingredients money can buy and combining techniques old and new in modern French dishes with a whiff of the Orient. Expect clean, precise flavours that look beautiful on the plate – witness luxurious native lobster that turns up with a delicately aromatic bisque incorporating carrot, parsley and lemongrass, or perhaps veal sweetbread with pineapple, black sesame and ginger. Exotic notes are again deployed to good effect in main courses, as when kaffir lime and dukkah spices enhance superlative monkfish served with onion shells packed with banana purée, or the gomasio, harissa and soya that come with organic Rhug Estate Welsh lamb. The aromatic note that distinguishes Bignon's cooking follows through to dessert stage too, when pineapple soufflé is scented with coriander and yellow chilli.
