The Poland Street iteration of Jason Atherton's burgeoning empire looks very much the Soho part, the rather anonymous frontage leading into a racy cavern of bare brick walls and distressed leather stools at the copiously stocked bar. Draw up a bentwood chair at a café table if you prefer for a menu that begins with sharing jars of smoked houmous and spiced aubergine, or confit duck rillettes with mango and coriander. The main menu deals in three-dimensional combinations that are more off the wall than at other Atherton venues, treacling côte de porc and salt-baking some white carrot for a main course that also incorporates cime di rapa and a spicy nut granola. Hake is smoked over applewood and served in seaweed butter with cured trout caviar and Charlottes, and anything can be further dolled up with a supplementary addition of truffle. Prior to those, look to octopus with charcoal mayonnaise and Padrón pepper in green sauce, and finish with a vibrant chocolate délice made with 70% cocoa gear, sharpened with raspberry and star anise and served with milk and honey ice cream.
