Tucked down a slip of a back street in Shoreditch, the Tavern occupies the site of what was, in Victorian times, a warehouse and apothecary's premises. Music nights are a regular feature in a space that feels expansive enough for parties, with its parquet floor and convex mirrors, and in between funky jams and Balearic beats, the kitchen seems in permanent overdrive. With Angela Hartnett as one of the owners, there's a sure touch to the entire operation, no matter what time you rock up. Porridge-and-prune breakfasts, weekend brunches, and a solid repertoire of populist European food at lunch and dinner do their level best to cover all bases. In the evenings, it could be sea bream tartare with horseradish and Avruga to begin, prior to a cheeky pasta dish such as leek tortelli with oxtail ragout and parmesan. Main courses are comfortingly substantial, perhaps for cod in mussel broth with monk's beard and turnips, or pork belly with apple, dates and parsley root purée. Desserts offer a cross-Channel list of Paris-Brest, gâteau basque with prunes and Armagnac, or rhubarb and custard.
