Located in a converted Victorian warehouse just off Great Eastern Street, Angela Hartnett's 'tavern' is a smartly accoutred modern eatery with bare brick walls, a parquet floor and circular seating bays. The culinary emphasis is a productive amalgamation of everybody's favourite bits of western Europe – essentially France, Spain and Italy – with charcuterie plates and toasted sandwiches to warm the cockles by a log fire in the bar, and a kitchen counter for chef-watchers. The main dining room deals in uncomplicated, but nonetheless imaginative, dishes of robust contemporary comfort food, of the likes of quail with foie gras and remoulade, dressed in hazelnut pesto and Treviso chutney, or a salad of violet artichoke, Swiss chard, pear and pecorino, to start, followed on by hearty main dishes such as braised cuttlefish with grilled polenta and fennel, or saddleback pork belly on grain-mustardy lentils with pumpkin purée. Finish with profiteroles and pistachio ice cream, or a Seville orange steamed pudding with cream poured over it. Sunday lunches are a draw for lazy weekends, when roast beef with all the trimmings seems too much of a faff at home, and there's an enterprising modern wine list with loads available by the glass.
