Okay, it maybe set at the less glam end of the King’s Road, but Medlar is the epitome of a top-flight neighbourhood outfit, and is rightly one of Chelsea’s go-to restaurants. Outside, there’s a little touch of summer curb-appeal, with an awning sheltering a few street-side terrace tables and glass doors that open up for that sunny-day Med vibe. Inside, the long, narrow room is simple yet smart without being showy; sunshine-green banquettes, cream upholstered chairs, white linen and burnished mirrors. It feels restrained and confident but not over-conceptualised like Joe Mercer Nairne’s cooking that’s built around flavour, simplicity and precision. Innovative, colourful, seasonal dishes come underpinned by classical grounding on fixed-price daily-printed menus. Light and fresh with every ingredient justifying its place; witness a sea-shore inspired opener crab raviolo, served with samphire, brown shrimps, a fondue of leeks and a cracking bisque sauce, while to follow, chargrilled pink-perfection veal rump might be partnered by celeriac purée, Savoy cabbage, a passaladière, king oyster mushroom and marjoram. To finish on a light note, perhaps refreshing prosecco and rhubarb jelly served with blood orange sorbet and pistachios. A weighty, top-notch wine list rounds of a classy act.
