The Locanda is a class act, suiting its location in this well-heeled neighbourhood. Comfortable ivory bucket seats, a parquet floor, textured wooden walls, diaphanous drapes and booths divided by etched-glass screens combine to make a fashion statement. It can be difficult to book a table, not because Giorgio Locatelli is a celebrity chef but because people clamour to sample his innovative take on Italian cuisine. The menu, in Italian with English subtitles, is laid out conventionally enough, from antipasti to dolci, but there's nothing conventional about the cooking. A salad of burrata cheese, blood orange, black olives, fennel and bread crisps impresses for its bursts of clear-cut flavours, as does another starter of pork sausage with Savoy cabbage, butter foam and saffron rice. Pasta dishes are the real deal, among them pappardelle with hare ragù spiked with cocoa, and contorni are worth exploring: perhaps sautéed cavolo nero with cured pork belly. Main courses, of top-end ingredients, show a kitchen firing on all cylinders: pan-fried cod fillet, perfectly timed, served simply with lentils and parsley sauce, say, or the full-bodied flavours of roast breast of guinea fowl with liver crostino, black truffle and glazed carrots. Don't pass on puddings when there's chocolate and orange fondant with coconut crumble and orange sorbet up for grabs.
