Opposite the flagship Pollen Street Social in a little backstreet just off Regent Street, Little Social is Jason Atherton’s take on the old-school French bistro theme. A copper-topped bar with high stools leads on to a low-lit space done out with burgundy-red leather banquettes and booths, darkwood tables, café-style wooden chairs and retro French vintage posters, while the busy babble of happy diners keeps the mood upbeat. Uncomplicated, full-throated dishes are designed to showcase the quality of prime materials, starting with roasted baby cauliflower and plump golden mussels ramped up with fragrant Thai green curry sauce. Roasted line-caught cod shines in the company of Morecambe Bay brown shrimps, spaghetti and fennel, or meatier fare might be represented by braised neck and a shepherd’s pie of Herdwick lamb with carrot and pesto. At the end, tarte Tatin or vanilla crème brûlée with blood orange sorbet keep things suitably gallic, as do La Fromagerie’s peerless cheeses.
